Religion and Spirituality

People in the world today are always being accused of lacking spirituality because of the way that they behave, the fact that they don’t go to church or that they don’t seem to believe in a god. But do they really lack spirituality?

The question is an interesting one and when you consider that today there are probably at least 3 more belief systems, religions, churches or creeds around than there were yesterday and indeed the day before that and so on – back to the dawn of time, you start to wonder if there really is a lack of spirituality today or is it that no matter what religion is preached they all just seem to be pretty good ‘earners.’

It is odd that one of the main requests, sometimes even before the salvation and well being of followers, that any church makes is for money for the church. Is giving money to a church or indeed just simply the act of giving money for any reason a spiritual action? Of course it isn’t, spirituality has nothing to do with money what so ever – something that no religion or belief system in the world admits to.

Spirituality is something that seems to come from inside a human being, of course it may also come from the inside of animals – humans just don’t know unless of course you are a follower of the beliefs of the indigenous population of America, who were often seen communing with Eagles and Wolves and indeed when individuals who call themselves ‘spiritualists’ appear to communicate with individuals who have “gone beyond the veil” they always seem to have a ‘spirit guide’ who is an American Indian and his Wolf or Eagle, so maybe animals do understand all things spiritual?

Who would really know about something spiritual surely by definition the word spiritual and its meaning, not only is ephemeral and like a mist – can’t be grasped, the word spiritual means different things to different people depending upon the culture they were raised in, the things that they choose to believe in and so forth.

If spirituality comes from inside a person and is therefore a personal treasure the last place it should be taken is any religious building because if that spiritual feeling is such a personal one as most people who claim to have experienced spiritual feelings say they are, then a spiritual feeling must also be a private one surely.

It follows that if a private feeling is shared it must become diluted every time it is shared, at best then that private spiritual feeling will be a shadow of its former self and at worst it may disappear altogether, maybe that is why so many religions and religios practitioners are so corrupt, for example Catholic priest praying on innocent children and of course suicide bombers who are fostered in Mosques.

You can see other examples of the damage done when a spiritual moment is shared the exploitation of desperate people just look at all of the shrines around the world where someone had a private spiritual experience. These shrines are exploited by the religions who claim them. Good examples of these and of course ‘nice little earners’ are Lourdes and Mecca.
